The 2007 specialty show season is now complete. There were a total of 123 Sheltie Specialty shows held this year including the National Specialty. One dog holds the top honors for the #1 Specialty Sire and #1 Top Ranked specialty Winner in 2007. He is Am/Can/Jp CH Pop Star SS of Northern Farm ROM. The tri dog was sired by CH Macdega Evergreen, out of Magic Mami of Northern Farm. He was bred by Yuki Shimoda. He is owned by Alexandra Luhrs and his handler, Tom Coen. Congratulations to all!

At the last specialty of the year today CH Lochend Love Letter repeated her Best of Breed win of Thursday. This Specialty was judged by Walter Sommerfelt.

Closing this week

There are two shows closing Wednesday, December 19. The new year kicks off with the Lochland Shetland Sheepdog Club Specialty at the River Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on Friday, January 4. The judges are Albert Bianchi (Breed and Juniors) and Robin Thompson (Sweeps). Also on that day, the Trinity Valley Shetland Sheepdog Club Specialty takes place at the Somerville County Expo Center in Glen Rose, Texas.

AKC Update -- News about Sheltie people
The latest AKC Gazette includes news that Steven Barbash of Victor, New York has been approved on a provisional basis to judge the breed. Two kennel names have been granted registration by the AKC. Melissa Engelking's Tellstar and Rose Marie Doran's Sirio have both been approved. Gracia Landes, representing Clackamas Kennel Club in Oregon, has been honored by the AKC with its Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. This award, established in 2006, honors those individuals who deserve special recognition that have made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs, embodied the AKC Code of Sportsmanship, and have been an active and valued member of an AKC member club.

Following is a wrap-up of AKC news about Sheltie people from February - June. The American Kennel Club has granted a breed-specific registered name prefix to Suzanne Healy (Soliare) and Beverly Llewellyn (Afta).

Liz Bianchi of Chesapeake, Virginia, Jacqueline Corwin of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Alice Inman of Weatherford, Texas, and Pamela Levin of Carpinteria, California have completed their provisional assignments and are approved to judge the breed.

Ann Barbash of Victor, New York, Jan and Peggy Haderlie of Silverado, California, Suzanne Healy of Scottsdale, Arizona, Janet Hitt of Newark, California, Dale Meyer of Dorchester, Wisconsin, Mary Murphy-East of Circle Pines, Minnesota, Betty Peplin of Arcade, New York, Linda Tefelski of Citrus Heights, California, and Jo Virden of Scottsdale, Arizona have been approved on a provisional basis and are approved to accept assignments.

Lynne Fox of Clarkesville, Georgia and Bill Holbrook of Sequim, Washington are reinstated to the AKC judges list.

Club News: SSC of SE Florida

The Shetland Sheepdog Club of Southeast Florida concluded its annual elections. The slate of officers for the new year include President Hector Hector, Vice President Dione Houchins, Secretary Meredith Hector, Treasurer Beth Sirvinskas and Board of Directors, Maryann Lannon, Karen Salvage and Lorna Staab. The club was originally formed in April of 1968 under the name, Shetland Sheepdog Club of Greater Miami. The name was changed in 1990 to better reflect a growing membership from the tri-county area -- Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.

Memorial: Kathy Hahn of HMS Shelties

Kathy Hahn of HMS Shelties passed away on Thursday, April 12, after a valiant fight with cancer. Her family and friends have been united in her support during the last few months. For those who never met Kathy, she was a dedicated breeder, a past member of the Central New York Shetland Sheepdog Club, a member of ASSA, and the mother of Katie Hahn, who showed the HMS Shelties as well as other shelties.

There will be no calling hours but a Memorial Service will be held Monday, April 16 at 11am. at:
Farrell-Ryan Funeral Home, 777 Long Pond Rd., Rochester NY (Greece NY) 14612.

The Memorial Service will be followed by a "Celebration OF Life" at the Boulevard Restaurant, 412 Empire Blvd., Rochester NY. 585 288 8123.

Contributions in Kathy's memory can be made to the American Cancer Society. Cards can be sent to the Hahn family, 20 Olde Tavern Circle, Rochester, NY 14612.

ASSA National Specialty (April 4 - 7)
CH Pop Star SS of Northern Farm was judge Linda More's Best of Breed at the American Shetland Sheepdog Association National Specialty held in Albany, Oregon this week. The tri dog was also the winner of the Stud Dog Class on Friday under Judge Daniel Wheatcroft. Sired by CH Macdega Evergreen, out of Magic Mami of Northern Farm, he was bred by Yuki Shimoda and is owned by Alexandra Luhrs and his handler, Tom Coen.

Best of Opposite Sex went to CH Shelhaven Rabbit Run Rhapsody, handled by Pete Denbow. The sable and white bitch was sired by CH Cindahope Trademark, out of Shelhaven Sunnyseas Symphony. She was bred by Karen and Robert Henley. She is owned by the Henley's and Connie Nelson.

In other judging today, Jennifer Hunt topped the Open Senior Class and eventually earned Best Junior Handler honors showing Caledon Deuces Are Wild under Judge Wheatcroft.

Yesterday's judging included Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. Grandgables Lets Show Off was Judge Wheatcroft's Winners Dog. Handled by his owner, Tracy Tuff, the sable was sired by CH Grandgables Its Show Time, out of Grandgables Foxy Lady. He was bred by Guy Jeavons and Mark McMillan. He is co-owned with Lorna Stolz.

Reserve Winners Dog went to Keystone Legend Has It. The blue dog was sired by the breed winner, CH Pop Star SS Of Northern Farm, ROM, out of Keystone Circus Circus. He is bred and owned by his handler, Cathy Reid, and Cindy Callaghan.

Judge David Calderwood's Winners Bitch was Grandgables Web Of Dezire, handled by Mark McMillan. Sired by Grandgables Kray Z Spiderman, out of TR's Grandgables Zulu Voodoo, the blue bitch and eventual Best of Winners, was bred by Dorothy Rinaldi, Guy Jeavons and Mark McMillan. She is owned by Brenda Christenson, Guy and Mark.

Reserve Winners Bitch went to Attridge Pandora, handled by her owner, Karen Linkletter. Sired by SKywards Versace, out of Attridge Black Brocade, the bi-black bitch was bred by Beverly Klassen.

ASSA National Specialty Futurity (April 2)
Mistybrooks By Invitation was Judge Susan Beacham's Best in Futurity today at the American Shetland Sheepdog Club National Specialty in Albany, Oregon. The sable bitch topped the 6 to 9 class, which was the largest class of the day with 32 exhibits. There was a total of 82 shelties, 24 dogs and 58 bitches, shown in the competition. She was sired by CH Dan Dee One From The Heart, out of CH Mistybrook Singles Club. She was bred by her owner-handler, Jan Williams and co-bred by Karen Hase.

Runner Up to Best in Futurity went to Paray Perfecta of Kismet. The winner of the 6 to 9 class was sired by CH Stonehaven Samurai, out of CH Grandgables Showcased At Paray. The tri dog was bred by his handler, Tray Pittman, Paul Flores and Guy and Thelma Mauldin. He is owned by Tray and Paul.

Jacksonville Shetland Sheepdog Club
Today in Deland, Florida, Lorna Staab's CH Cameo Dreamchaser started the new year by winning Best of Breed at the Jacksonville Shetland Sheepdog Club Specialty under judge Lisa Graser. The bi-black dog was sired by CH Glenesk Darkfall, out of Cameo Rosmoor Leap of Faith. He was bred by Marilyn Marlow.
