2016 Performance Week: Spark's Journey

By Vicki Rolls

AKC CH/UKC GRCH UWPCH URO2 BIMBS Allaround Majestyk Strike Anywhere RN AX MXJ NF HT VCX

Spark was born in June 2012 and is by Ch Foxglove Con Brio Fiorano x Ch Allaround Majestyk Glacier RN AX OAJ NF. He was bred by Alanna Kelly, Allaround Shelties, Terri Little, Majestyk Shelties and Vicki Rolls, Belcroft Shelties. Katherine Ostiguy wanted a dog that could compete equally well in breed and performance. Her first Sheltie, also from us, ended up too big for the breed ring, but she not only put a variety of top performance titles on him, she used him during her training at the Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner and obtained her KPA CPT certification.

Spark went to Katherine and her partner Dan Lombard at 4 months of age and at 6 ½ months went Best of Breed over specials at his first show for two points. At 8 months old he finished his UKC championship his first weekend out taking two Best of Breeds and a Group 1. Katherine found Spark to be a creative thinker with a bold, outgoing temperament.

Katherine’s goal was a VCX title and in addition to competing in the breed ring for both AKC and UKC, she trains and shows Spark in Agility, Rally and Herding in AKC. In UKC he has does Rally and Weight-pulling and has his UKC Weight Pull Championship. Spark will be working in Obedience as their next project.

In the fall of 2015 Spark earned a Best in Multi-Breed Show in UKC under Pamela Simmons in September, then followed that up with back-to-back majors under Edeltraud Laurin and Norman Kenney to finish his AKC Championship at the Thanksgiving Cluster in November. In UKC Spark finished the year #5 Shetland Sheepdog in UKC Top Ten. For 2016 he is currently #3.

In 2016, Spark has been out to a few shows as a special, and is about halfway to his AKC Grand Championship with 11 points and 2 majors. He earned his Master Excellent Jumper (MXJ) title in the spring, followed by completing his Herding Tested (HT) title to earn his Versatility Excellent certificate from ASSA! In June, Katherine and Spark traveled to the UKC Premier. In the Top Ten International Invitational, he won Top Ten Best of Breed and placed 3rd in Top Ten Finals (out of over 400 invited dogs). He also won two regular Best of Breed awards, earned a Total Dog award, and won Total Dog Group 3rd in that special competition.

It can be difficult to strike a balance when showing a dog in multiple events as well as showing in both AKC and UKC events but Katherine has been able to work Spark through it all and make it look effortless. She has put all the titles on Spark. And during the same time she has been growing her business as a dog trainer.

Congratulations to Katherine and Spark on reaching your dream of a VCX!!!
