Preview: Shetland Sheepdog Club
of Greater New Orleans
A sign that the Gulf Coast region is on the mend is the return of the Metairie Kennel Club Dog Show, the host club since 1999 for the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Greater New Orleans Specialty scheduled for Saturday, December 9, closing Wednesday, November 22.
A year ago the American Kennel Club cancelled more than two dozen dog show events in the region because of Hurricane Katrina. This year Metairie KC and the SSC of Greater New Orleans make a comeback at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center in Biloxi .
All-breed judge, Patti Widick Neale of Alachua , Florida , will preside. She's approved for 55 breeds, and provisional for 10 others – all in the Herding Group, including Shelties. She gained her provisional status back in March. She's also approved for Junior Showmanship and Best In Show.
Her first sheltie assignment was in early September in Lexington at the Mid-Kentucky Kennel Club. Her Best of Breed in an entry of 14 class dogs, 8 class bitches and 1 dog special was April Dunford and Rita Von Pusch's sable dog, CH Summerlove's Zak Attack, who capped the day by going Group 3 under Christopher Neale.
Susan Pate of Sandance Shelties in Mobile , Alabama , brings more than a quarter century of experience in the breed to the Sweepstakes assignment.
