Striving for Perfection

Preview: Colonial Shetland Sheepdog Club

The Colonial Shetland Sheepdog Club has a mission. And, at the top of the list of lofty ideas the club has for itself is "to encourage and promote the breeding of purebred Shetland Sheepdogs and to do all possible to bring their qualities to perfection."

The expression of that ideal, a progress report of sorts, will come to pass on Friday, December 1, when CSSC hosts its specialty show at the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Fitchburg, Mass. Long-time collie breeder, Joe Reno, will preside over the breed and Shield Crest's Charlene Jones has the Sweepstakes assignment.

In recent years, that expression has come in the form of Best of Breed winners like, CH Pop Star SS Of Northern Farm, the tri-color dog who won here three years in a row from 2003 to 2005, the veteran sable bitch, CH Genesis Forever My Lady, who won the top award back in June under judge Barbara Thompson, and CH Aylmere I'm No Angel, who was Sandy McIntosh's choice in 2002.

This show's judge, Joe Reno, started in Collies in 1971, breeding under the Hi-Crest prefix. He was CCA District Director for New Jersey for more than two decades starting in 1984 and has served on the CCA Health Committee. Joe has a reputation for excellence in the breed based on his achievements at all levels of competition -- local, regional and national. Three of his blue bitches have won Awards of Merit at the CCA National and he has bred more than 15 Rough champions. When Joe brings an entry other exhibitors can be sure that the awards are going to more competitive. Popular with collie fanciers, he judged bitches at the 2003 CCA National Specialty in Rochester, Minnesota.

Joe has been judging Shelties since 1997, including one specialty assignment hosted by the Central Virginia Shetland Sheepdog Club in October 2003. His Best of Breed there was Barwoods Afterglow II, a 2-1/2-year-old bitch, who came from the classes. Joe has drawn good entries in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Ohio, where he got 90 shelties at the Richland County Kennel Club in December of 1997.

SHELTIE QUOTE
Prior to marrying me, my husband [Tom] was partial to miniature schnauzers. After living with shelties for more than ten years, he's now a true blue "sheltie man!"
