Ring Patterns: A look back at October 2016

Northern California Specialty leads with highest entry in October
There were 23 specialty shows held in 10 states during October: California, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Nebraska, Virginia, Ohio, Nevada, Texas, Florida and New Jersey. The Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California pulled the largest entry of the month with 71 entries and most competitors with 60 for Jo Ann Pavey.
This specialty was held in Pleasantville, California at the same location as a large group of specialty-giving clubs and National Specialty shows. All-breed shows hosted by Skyline Dog Fanciers of San Mateo County and Del Valle Dog Club of Livermore were also held this weekend at the same location with entries averaging 1,700 per day.

Double digit top awards in Obedience
October brought several top obedience awards for shelties including eight Highest Scoring in Regular Classes and five Highest Combined Score in OB and UA/UB.

Herding Group placements robust in October
There were 61 Herding Group placements awarded in October, including 2 Best in Shows (Michael Shoreman and Del Richards) and 1 Reserve Best in Show (Rosemary Shoreman) along with 12 Group 1 awards under judges; Barbara Wright, Harold Pybus, Michael Shoreman, Jan Paulk, Rosemary Shoreman, Sandy Wheat, Pat Putman, Tom Coen, Keke Kahn, Dana Cline, Willam Rodriguez, and Del Richards.

The number 279 represents the month's largest Group in which a sheltie placed -- 4th under Sheree Moses (German Shepherds) at Sacramento Valley Dog Fanciers Association on October 29 in Dixon, California.

Most awards for National Owner-Handled Series shelties
Herding Group judges placed shelties 36 times in the American Kennel Club National Owner-Handled Series, including 4 Best Owner-Handled in Show awards under judges Karen Skaggs, Del Richards, Neil McDevitt and Ken Buxton and 1 Reserve Best Owner-Handled in Show under judge Monika Pinsker. The month of May follows this month with the next highest placements with 26.
