Ring Patterns: A look back at July 2016

Oregon club celebrates 75th anniversay in grand style
There were 11 specialty shows held in 5 states during July: Oregon, Texas, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and California. It was the Saturday specialty show for Pacific Northwest Shetland Sheepdog Club, which celebrated its 75th anniversary, where Barbara Wright judged the largest talent pool -- 44. This specialty was part of a four-show specialty weekend in mid July -- one specialty on each day -- Friday to Monday, in Albany, Oregon. Judge Wright was approved for the breed in July of 1995.

Emerald Empire entry tops 50
Lynette Stewart also tallied the largest entry for the month with 53 at Emerald Empire Shetland Sheepdog Club. This was the Sunday edition of that four-specialty-show weekend in Albany, Oregon in mid July.

Shelties celebrate more than the fourth in July
There were nine top obedience awards earned in July in the following states: Oklahoma, Texas, New York, South Carolina and Massachusetts. The highest entry in competition was 80 at Beaumont Kennel Club in Texas.

Shelties among the best of the best nationwide
In California, judges Steve Keating (Pekingese) and Patricia Hastings (Poodles) both awarded Best in Shows

Along with these top awards there were 32 Group placements, including 7 Group 1 awards. The number 260 represents the month's largest group in which a sheltie placed -- Group 3 under Judge Sharon Newcomb (Shetland Sheeddogs).

Owner-Handled Shelties shine with "Bests"
Three Best Owner-Handled in Show were awarded in Vermont, Indiana and Pennsylvania under judges Jon Cole (Bull Terriers), David Osborn (Akitas) and Patricia Lanctot (Canada), respectively.

Herding Group judges placed shelties 22 times in the AKC National Owner-Handled Series, including 6 Group 1s, 6 Group 2s, 5 Group 3s and 5 Group 4s.
