Kennebec Valley SSC hosted
"Quest for Quality" --
Presented by Tom Coen

July 21 and 22, 2007

Article by Jeanne McNally

Kennebec Valley SSC was pleased to host the very worthwhile (and very well attended) seminar presented by Tom Coen, QUEST FOR QUALITY on July 21st, and 22nd. The seminar began with a slide presentation, narrated by Tom, of the breed’s history dating back to its very early beginnings. As Tom so aptly points out, in order “to know where we are going, it is important to know where we’ve been”. It was interesting to see the progression of breed type through the influence of the early kennels. The Shetland Sheepdog standard (the blueprint of the breed) was discussed in detail followed by a panel discussion made up of experienced and long-time successful breeders including Macdega’s Nioma Coen and Kim Aston of Laureate Shelties. At day’s end we rewarded ourselves with an authentic Maine lobster feed and the weather actually cooperated and contributed to a “good time was had by all” event – day one!!

Participants’ dogs were used in the analysis of essential features while Tom offered a wonderful “hands on” approach in explaining the breed standard on day two. The invaluable “Virtues” match followed with categories including head detail, expression, outline, structure and movement etc. with experienced breeders judging each class and the virtues called for in the breed standard were discussed in detail.

As a Sheltie artist and enthusiast, simply put, it was exciting to be in the presence of a legend telling the “story” of the Shetland Sheepdog from it’s very humble beginnings to the present day. Tom has a profound insight into what the future can hold if we adhere to the guidelines presented. If you get the chance – GO! You won’t be disappointed!

Kennebec Valley SSC would like to thank Nioma Coen, Kim Aston, Peter Culumovic, Nancy Everett, dedicated members of KVSSC and of course Tom Coen for their commitment to making this seminar the success it was.

SHELTIE QUOTE
The art of judging is to try to select the most meritorious dog, understanding that perfection lies just out of reach in nearly every case.
